About Roger
I spent my early years in Anglesey where I acquired a love for the sea and sailing. In the mid 1970’s I qualified in my chosen profession and with experience progressed to achieve Fellowship of a Royal Institution. After a career spanning 40 years I retired early to spend more time with my family and pursue long held interest in the visual arts. Dorset has been my family home since 1983.
I have achieved recognition as an established painter of landscapes and coastal scenes and I work mainly in oils. Initially I was taught by a professional teaching artist to paint in the traditional manner of 19C and 20C English landscape painters. I learnt to adapt their working methods and processes to produce paintings using the same, or modern equivalents of materials available during their time. The underlying influences of Turner, Edward Seago and Fred Cuming feature in many of my paintings. These can be moody and atmospheric in capturing time and place and are characterised by their tonal qualities, interesting optical effects and energetic brushstrokes. Recent work is less resolved which allows viewers to enjoy an experience of discovery and personal interpretation.
Throughout the year I can be found working outdoors on location. I use sketches and drawings to establish interesting compositions and capture the essence of the moment. For this I use materials such as pencil, pen and ink, charcoal and pastel to produce reference material for potential subjects that capture my interest and are capable of being developed into finished works.
If the weather is suitable and settled, I will paint en plein air and produce small paintings finished wet on wet in one session of about two hours maximum.
In the Studio I convert the information I have gathered on location into larger sized paintings in oil on canvas, board or panel .
Some of my drawings and paintings are based on travel overseas, including Mediterranean Europe, India, Central and South America and New Zealand.
