Sketchbook

These are a few examples of sketches I have made on location to provide inspiration for studio paintings. For artists, the discipline of maintaining sketchbooks is essential. Good drawing is the basis of everything and is fundamental to constructing a sound and interesting composition for a finished painting. This is a far better approach than to rely on photographs for reference material. From line sketches I progress to tonal drawings which enable me to assess the best balance between light and dark for the theme of the painting. From there I embark on the painting process.
